Single-parent family certificate

Status awarded to families consisting of one or more children under the age of 21, or under the age of 26 if they are studying, who live together and are financially dependent on a single person.

The title of single-parent family confers various benefits, tax advantages and reductions. There is an individual card for each of the beneficiary members.

Registration in the municipal register: Must be registered as a resident in Catalonia.

Legal residence: Yes. Must have legal residence in Spain, demonstrated with a valid residence permit.

General

National ID card/Tax ID/Foreigner’s ID of the applicant and children over 18 years of age, family record book or equivalent document (court ruling, notarial deed, administrative resolution of adoption or guardianship).

Specific

Certificates of cohabitation, studies, death, court rulings on separation, child support payments, situations of violence or abandonment, certificates of residence in institutions (prison or hospital), income tax returns for children over 21 years of age.

Persons with nationality of another EU country

EU residence permit, certificate from the Central Register of Foreigners, passport or identity document from the country of origin.

Persons with non-EU nationality

Current resident’s permit for all members of the household.

 

Recognised disability: A disabled person is defined as a person with a recognised degree of disability equal to or greater than 33% and a person unable to work is defined as a person with an absolute permanent disability or severe disability.

Victim of domestic violence: A parent with dependent children who has suffered from violence as defined in Law 5/2008, of 24 April, on the right of women to eradicate gender-based violence, will be considered to be a single parent family.

Amount and frequency:

- Fees: There are no fees associated with this procedure.

- Deadlines: It can be applied for at any time.

- Validity of the certificate: The certificate is valid for four years, but when the oldest child reaches the age of 21, it is valid for two years except in the following cases:

  • In the case of simple foster care lasting more than one year: validity is equal to the duration of the foster care.
  • In the case of foreign nationals residing in Catalonia: validity is equal to the duration of the residence permit. If the renewal of the permit is being processed: validity of up to six months.
  • In the case of proof of studies using enrolment from the previous year when the current year’s enrolment has not yet been completed, or in cases where the enrolment does not bear the bank payment stamp: validity of three months.
  • If the issuance of the certificate depends on income: validity of one year.
  • In the case of certificates issued in cases where no child support payments are received: validity of two years.
  • In the case of certificates issued in cases of violence: validity of two years.
  • In the case of certificates issued in cases of incarceration, hospitalisation or similar circumstances: validity of one year.
